Holy Trinity Catholic Church Music Ministries

“The Church is always at prayer in her ministers and her people,
and that prayer takes various forms in her life.
Singing is one of the primary ways that the assembly
of the faithful participates actively in the Liturgy.”

-Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship- 2007

Music is a vital part of our liturgical celebrations. Our parish is blessed with an all-volunteer group of musically-talented individuals who share their gifts by leading our congregation in song.  Holy Trinity Music Ministry offers a diverse program of liturgical music to enhance the experience of the assembled congregation including Adult and Spanish Choirs, Contemporary Ensembles, Life Teen Music Ministry and Cantors.  Any parishioner who wants to be involved in the Music Ministry program should contact the Director of Music or speak with one of the musicians at Mass.

Director of Music: Lucy Tavira,

Lucy Tavira has been a Music Teacher at Catholic Schools in San Antonio for 15 years.  During her teaching years she produced many musical programs with her students.  Some of them were filmed, and aired on the Catholic Television of San Antonio. Her student choir was often invited to sing in programs prepared by the CTSA. She joined Holy Trinity Catholic Church as Director of Music and Liturgy in August 2012.  She holds a Master’s Degree in Music Education earned in Poland.

5 PM Saturday Evening Musicians:

Bernice and Larry Friesenhahn are native San Antonians. They grew up on the south side and attended St. Cecilia’s Church.  While attending St. Cecilia’s school both were involved in music ministry playing guitar and singing for school and Sunday Masses. Bernice continued to participate in music ministry in high school and numerous adult choirs and was choir director at St. John Neumann’s Catholic Church for several years.  They came to Holy Trinity in 1995 and Bernice immediately joined the choir. In 2003 they answered Monsignor Fater’s call for Saturday evening music ministers and have provided music for this Mass ever since. Larry plays guitar and bass when the occasion arises, and Bernice plays guitar and leads the congregation in song. Both are retired educators with one son, Russell, who resides in California.

8AM Sunday Morning Musician:

A native to San Antonio, Connor Kabes has been involved in music his entire life.  Starting piano instruction at age 5, Connor was inspired by his music teacher who played piano for Mass at Catholic School.  When he was given the chance to play, his interest in liturgical music began to grow, and he later became the regular school pianist.  Connor is grateful for the opportunity to play weekly at Holy Trinity and also enjoys playing piano at weddings.  He plays for the 8:00 AM weekly Mass, is the Associate Accompanist for the Adult Choir and plays trumpet in the band at Antonian College Preparatory High School, where he is currently enrolled, and will graduate in 2014.  Connor plans to pursue a career in Chemistry, but is determined to keep music close to his heart.

9:30 AM Sunday Morning Musicians:

Fred Bueche and Shelia Morse lead the music ministry weekly at the 9:30 am Mass. Song selection for the Mass reinforces the message of the readings using both traditional and contemporary Catholic music.  The focus of the music ministry is to invite the congregation to more fully participate in the celebration of the liturgy and Eucharist thru song.

Fred has a very rich musical background being the son of Dolores Bueche who has been the Director of Music  at St. Gregory's Catholic Church since 1975.  Fred performed in a band called FireFox for about ten years where he gained broad experience on the stage playing the guitar, keyboard, and singing vocals.  He also served as a music minister for over 12 years  at other parishes, before he joined Holy Trinity’s music ministry in 2000.   Fred has written several original songs sung at Mass, including but not limited to, With Water I Will Change Your Life, Be With Me Lord, and Remember Your Mercies O Lord. He is supported and loved by his beautiful wife, Robin, and two children.

Shelia began playing the piano as a young child and entered the music ministry in her home town of Lawton, OK as an eighth grader. She was a vocalist and pianist in church and school all thru high school and college. She moved to San Antonio and joined the Holy Trinity music ministry in 2008 playing the piano and background vocals at the 9:30 am mass.  Shelia is loved and supported by her husband, Bob, and three children.

11:00 AM Sunday Morning Musicians:

Tony and Brenda (Dlugosh) Franckowiak grew up in the Dellcrest neighborhood in southeast San Antonio. As teenagers they started a folk Mass at their parish, St. Benedict’s, and led the Sunday morning Mass there for over 20 years. They moved here to Holy Trinity in 1997, and made the same commitment for our parish. Both play guitar for Mass, and Brenda can also play piano when the occasion calls for it. They include the parts of the Mass from “Country Blessing”, a country style Mass recorded by seminarians in the 1970’s. In addition to Sunday Mass, Brenda sings at many wedding ceremonies and other special events throughout the year.

Both Brenda and Tony are professional musicians, performing every weekend with their popular band Cactus Country throughout the South Texas circuit. Over the years, the band has played with numerous Nashville stars, and has also performed on the main stage at the State Fair of Texas. The band has even traveled internationally, performing in Costa Rica, Central America for the grand opening of a Texas style restaurant there. Locally, in addition to a variety of festivals like the Rodeo and Fiesta Oyster Bake, they perform regularly at the Leon Springs Dancehall. The group is also heavily in demand for conventions and company parties.

They accepted Monsignor Fater’s challenge to record “Our Music” in their digital recording studio, and also recorded Dan Duet’s CD debut. Since completion of these projects they have also recorded several other local Christian acts, helping these artists to get exposure for their own music ministry. Pick up a copy of “Our Music” from the parish office, we’ll sure you’ll enjoy it.  If you would like to keep up with Brenda and Tony or see them perform, here is a link to their website "The Cactus Country Band".
