To serve as a deacon means to become a co-worker in the ministry of the local bishop by assisting the bishop or his priests at liturgies, proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and serving the People of God in ministries of charity. According to the Catechism, deacons "share in Christ's mission and grace in a special way." Their ordination "configures them to [Jesus] Christ, who made himself the 'deacon' or servant of all."
